Countless substitutes step in for absent teachers in the Olathe School District. Olathe North is no exception and has many substitutes who fill in for absent teachers on the daily. Many substitutes will drop in the school every now and again but aren’t well known by many students. However, some substitutes have become more popular than others and are beloved by students and teachers alike. These special substitutes are seen so often that they’ve practically become honorary staff members.
When it comes to favorite substitute teachers, the same names commonly pop up when asking students. During an interview, one student shared who one of their favorite substitute teachers is.
“Mr. Douglas is my favorite substitute,” said Kiersten Blake (11). “He’s always so kind and respectful to the students.”
One such teacher who substitutes frequently at North and who is popular among students is Ms. Carol Stovall. In an interview, she shared how she started substituting and what she loves about Olathe North.
“I used to be a full-time 5th grade teacher in the Shawnee Mission School District. I started subbing in 2020 during COVID,” said Stovall.
She shared that she loves the flexibility and variability that comes with being a sub, and that English classes are her favorite to sub for due to her background.
“I like being a sub because I get to see lots of different students, and I have time to do things at home because I don’t work everyday,” she said. “I have a minor in English, so teaching ELA is my favorite. I have completed two long terms for Mrs. Loecker and am getting ready to start one for Mr. Sapenhoff. The students I had sophomore year are now seniors, and I love seeing them in the hall.”
When asked what her favorite thing about North is, Stovall shared that North has something that she thinks makes it very unique.
“Olathe North is my favorite high school. There is just something different about it. North has more of an inclusive feel, like a family. I love the administration, staff, and most of all, the students,” she said.
