For more than 5 years, the Diversity Assembly has been a time for students from all different backgrounds to share parts of their culture that are important to them. Through it, students are given a look into the many cultures that make up Olathe North.
“I think the most important part of it is showing our diversity and expressing appreciation for it, but also coming together as one to do that,” Cris Pitman, the organizer of the Diversity Assembly, said.
The event features a number of different activities: poetry, dance, and even singing are all featured. On top of that, many students wear traditional outfits and carry flags from all sorts of countries.
Many different clubs and organizations take part in the event, including the Black Student Union, Feminist Club, Gender and Sexuality Alliance, and Latina Leadership club. Through the assembly, these groups have a chance to uplift and celebrate themselves and each other.
“The students worked very hard. We should be proud of them for being brave and celebrating their backgrounds,” Pitman said.
Diversity is one of Olathe North’s most important principles. By holding the Diversity Assembly every year, the principle is reinforced and strengthened as the student body comes together to share and appreciate the things that set everyone apart.
