On Thursday, April 30th, Olathe North’s girl’s softball teams played agaisnt Olathe South’s girl’s softball team in their annual Pink Out Night games. These schools have been taking turns hosting these games to honor anyone who has had cancer or are fighting it. Every girl gets the option to honor someone in their family who has been affected by cancer. They have sighs made with the names of the people that the players submitted saying “I’m honoring *insert name or names*” For the players who might not have anyone to honor they have signs that say “I’m playing to strike out cancer” Both teams have their own seperate desgined shirts that they wear for these games. This year Olathe South hosted the games and had their guest of honor come out to throw the first pitch. Their guest of honor was Anne Otroszko, who teaches Algebra II and Applied Geometry at Olathe South. In 2022 she went in for her annual mammogram and was diagnosed with stage 2A breast cancer. She worried so about what this meant for her family and herself. She found out that the cancer was hormone driven and not hereditary. She overcame the challenges learn They also had a second guest to honor that was closer to home for the softball team. The Olathe South team’s own player Marlee Thornburg was diagnosed with Classical Hodgkin Lymphoma before the season started and has been undergoing chemotherapy every other week, all while continuin g to play softball with such strength and determination. Their team has been wearing purple ribons in their hair in support and honor of Thornburg. The games went very great for both teams and a great way to end of Olathe North’s JV season while the varsity goes on.
