On April 8th to April 12th, Distinguished Scholar Science & Geoscience students took their capstone project research projects to compete in the Greater Kansas City Science 7 Engineering Fair at Union Station
Olathe North has 28 students enter the competition, 22 earned Golds & 6 silvers
Arshika Kanna, Dominic Marroquin, Gabriel Mozingo, Colleen Schroeber, Jacob Stuckey, & Alice Heisel would all go on to win either first, second, or third place in their category.
Senior Gavin Winsor chose to investigate the antibacterial properties of Berberine Hydrochloride.
“It was a little random, but I wanted to see if stuff found in our backyards could help our health. Everyone’s heard of herbal supplements and remedies and I wanted to see if they actually worked,” said Winsor.
The process of planning & researching for the capstone project was lengthy.
“I had to come up with an idea for the experiment, research how to actually do it, perform the trials, and then interpret the data before I put everything I did onto a poster and presented it at the science fair and in front of a board of Distinguished Scholars teachers,” Said Winsor.
Despite all the pressure, the presenting experience still went well.
“I had spent so long researching my project that I had a really good understanding of how to present it. It was still nerve wracking, but not as much as I expected it to be,” said Winsor.
